Edward H. Shepherd, 85, died on October 28, at Lehigh Valley Hospice. He was married for 53 years to and is survived by Frances (Griesser). What makes a painter do what he does? Take a man like Ed Shepherd. He came to a rural village with just one purpose- to paint it. For in him was a spirit that makes men do things, not just dream of doing. On all sorts of days he was out of doors-at the top of a hill, or along the band of a creek, by a barn or road patiently painting or drawing to give us something to show the wealth that is ours. He reminded us of the joys of simple things. He was educated at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and studied with Henry Hensche at the Cape School of Art, Provincetown, MA. He headed his own architectural rendering firm in Philadelphia serving architectural, advertising and engineering firms- a business he gave up in 1963, aware that he was becoming a businessman, not an artist. He lived in Chester County until 1970 when he came to Berks County where he found the landscape he came to love. He taught watercolor classes at the Baum School of Art, Allentown, PA and at Chester Springs Studio, Chester Springs, PA. He was a signature member of the American Watercolor Society and the Philadelphia Water Color Society. Services will be private. The Edward J. Hildenbrand Funeral Home, Inc., Kutztown, is assisting the family. To express online condolences, please visit www.hildenbrandfuneralhome.com
